Top: My Mackie 1604 VLZ Mixer,
I have 3 of these and also a 32
channel/8 sub Mackie recording
console.
Bottom: This is my 2nd rack I
have built for live set ups.
I utilize MIDI for my background tracks. I program quite a lot and have a full
MIDI studio where I create much of what you hear when I play.
In my live set up I have 2 rack mount synthesizers, A Roland JV-1010 and a Korg
NX5R. I use a Roland R-70 drum machine and an Art SGX 2000 Express for my
guitar effects.

- power strip... I know, pretty high
tech
- MIDIMan MidiSport 8x8/s 8-
port MIDI interface. This
allows my computer and sequencing
software to communicate with all
my equipment.
- Alesis 3360 Compressor
- Lexicon MX200
- Behringer Ultra Curve Pro
- Alesis DEQ 830
- Roland R-70 Drum Machine
- Roland JV-1010 / Korg NX5R
- Art SGX 2000 Express
- Aphex 204 Aural Exciter
I also use -
- Audio Technica Condenser Mics
- Mackie 1604VLZ Mixers
- Compaq and Dell Computers
running CakeWalk for my
sequencing software
I have many guitars, acoustic and electric both. I have my Alvarez, a Taylor, an
Ovation, all steel string acoustic/electrics and a Yamaha nylon string
acoustic/electric guitar. I also have a '61 Stratocaster, a '57 Re-Issue
Stratocaster and a custom built double neck strat with a 12 string. For my
MIDI stuff, I have the Roland Ready Stratocaster and an Axon MIDI Guitar
Converter. As you can see, I like Strats a lot.
I use a Roland XP-80 keyboard, Roland SP-10 drum pads and my Axon/Roland
Ready Strat to produce my sequences. I have several rack mount synths for
recording that I don't use live.
Live I usually play my Alvarez acoustic/electric. It's about 20 or 25 years old, it
was my first "real" acoustic and I love the way it plays and sounds.
I installed a Lace "California Special" sound hole pickup in it and switch between
that and the bridge pickup depending on what I'm playing. I run it through my Art
SGX 2000 and MIDI switches my effects on the fly for me.
Hopes this helps the curious folks out there, but you can always ask me too, I'll
try to answer all questions if I can.

A larger shot of my current live rack.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
You can email them to me, call me, or just
walk up and talk to me where I'm playing. I
have helped many musicians to better
understand MIDI and how my set up works.
I get many questions about how I get my
sound for my sequences, how do I get my
guitar sound, etc. Now you can see it, ask
whatever you would like to know. I will try
to answer all questions as best I can.
I have several outboard pieces of equipment as you can see in
the pictures. Starting at the top of the rack, I have a -
** I run my sequences off one of my laptops. That feeds to my MIDISport 8x8/s.
Port 1 runs the Roland JV-1010 synth. Port 2 runs the Roland R-70 drum machine.
Port 3 runs my guitar, vocal and drum effects. Port 4 runs my Korg NX5R synth.
I program the sequences to change my guitar, vocals and drum effects on the fly
for me. I'm also working up a MIDI controlled light show on port 3.
** I use one channel of the Alesis 3360 compressor for my vocals and the other
channel for the bass.
** I use one channel of the Lexicon MX200 for vocal effects and the other
channel for drum reverbs, all MIDI controlled.
** I use the Behringer Ultra Curve for the drums, one channel is set up as a 3
band parmetric EQ for the kick drum, the other channel is 1/3 octave EQ for the
snare drum. Both channels have compression programmed as well and is MIDI
controlled.
** I use the Alesis DEQ 830 (8 separate 1/3 octave Equalizers) as follows. 2
channels 7 & 8 are for the mains out to the power amp. Channel 1 is for the drums
- Toms, Bongas, Congas, etc. Channel 2 is for the drums - Cymbals, Hand
Percussion, Hi-Hats, etc. I still have 4 channels available. This too is MIDI
controlled.
** From the mixer main outs inserts I go to the Alesis EQ, out to the Aphex 204
Aural Exciter.
** I recently started using the new Bose system for amps and speakers.

Current projects I'm working on
As I learned to program MIDI, I discovered more and more that you could do with
it. Currently I'm working on programming a MIDI controlled light show to go with
my live show. I probably will never get to use it in the restaurant/lounge
environment.... but you never know.
I am working with MIDI controlled dimmer systems and DMX controlled
intelligent lights and while very time consuming, I am having a blast. It's really
cool when I complete a song and see my lighting design perfectly synced to the
music. I guess it's the simple things in life, ya know.
I'm also working on switching my sequences over to my new live rack. It uses a
Roland XV-5080 synth in that rack. The sounds are much richer sounding. Plus,
there are literally thousands more sounds to choose from. It's a long process to
switch all my songs over while still learning what people are asking for and playing
every week. I'll get it there soon.
